Detailed Trip Descriptions

Day Hike: Jones State Forest and Arboretum, Saturday, February 2
Enjoy the outdoors near Houston and get outside for the day. We'll get a chance to hike, bird watch and orienteer at Jones State Forest on nature trails and off-trail. We may get a chance to see the endangered species red-cockaded woodpecker. Then we'll head over to take a look at the nearby Mercer Arboretum.

Climbing in Austin at Reimer's Ranch, February 22-23
Reimer's ranch is located about an hour west of Austin. This Travis County Park is along the Pedernales River in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Climbs range from 5.9 and above and are 30 to 75 feet high. All climbing abilities welcome. We will be driving out Friday afternoon and camping near the park. Saturday will be spent climbing all morning and afternoon. We will return to campus Saturday night. Pre-trip meeting on Feb. 20 in the Recreation Center is required, 6-7:15 p.m. Participants provide their own food. Camping and Climbing gear is provided.

Day Sailing in Kemah, March 22
Step up to the challenge of sailing a beautiful 38-foot sailboat off Kemah, on Galveston Bay, and savor the effects of this unique "hydro-therapy". Some of you may wish to just kick back and enjoy the afternoon. Others may want to actually participate in hoisting the sails and/or steering the boat. Both opportunities are before you. This sailing experience is to be hosted by trans-Atlantic sailor Capt. Dave McCabe of Blue Marlin Sailing.

Big Thicket Canoe Trip in Pineywoods, April 3-5
Spend spring recess in the Big Thicket National Preserve, 86,000 acres. We will leave around lunchtime on Thursday April 3. We may start on the River Thursday afternoon or camp at a State park nearby, depending on the group's interests. Friday morning we'll get out on the water with our canoes. We'll camp out on a sandbar along the water on Friday night. Saturday we'll work our way down the river farther and then return to campus that night. Participants provide their own food. Camping and Canoeing gear is provided. Pre-trip meeting is required: Tuesday, April 1, 6:00 p.m.

Outdoor Cooking on Campus, April 19
Learn the basics of outdoor cooking and then eat your creations.
