Work Hard Play Harder
It’s no surprise to learn that Rice
students push themselves academically. After all, according to
the university’s 2002 senior survey, undergrads at Rice
spend more hours burning the midnight oil than all but one of
their Ivy and non–Ivy League peers. But Rice students also
apply their feverish work ethic to the activities they enjoy
in their off time—spending many hours working part-time
jobs, volunteering, acting, dancing, organizing groups, skydiving,
and of course, attending the requisite party or pub night.
This installment of “Class” tells the story of what
happens in the lives of sophomores Aaliya, Phil, Alessandra, Lorenzo,
and Catherine when they take a much-needed break from burning the
candle at both ends.

When
most people think about the social lives and activities
of college students, they typically think of raucous parties
and general mayhem. And to be fair, Rice has its share
of that. But students who’ve chosen and been accepted
to Rice often have an exceptional work ethic, varied interests,
and a strong desire to go above and beyond the expected.
This combination pushes them to find fun, creative outlets
in which to pursue the goals they’ve set for themselves.
Aaliya, Phil, Alessandra, Lorenzo, and Catherine are just
five examples of Rice students who work hard—and
play even harder.
The
next installment of “Class” will
be featured in the fall 2003 edition of Sallyport.
