Rick Smalley, Rice chemist and co-discoverer of the buckyball, who died in October, has been called the grandfather of nanotechnology. Certainly he was one of its greatest advocates. His energy and formidable presence will be missed, but his legacy will live on, not only in discoveries yet to be made but in ways of thinking about how science and technology can be used to improve lives worldwide.
