Academic & Research Computing (ARC)
Gary Kidney , Director
The Academic & Research Computing (ARC) group provides campus-wide desktop support and is the face on many of IT's customer service efforts. ARC staff support the Help Desk, research computing, instructional technology, and training, videoconferencing and video coverage of courses and events.
Projects include:
- Sakai Open Source Collaboration Framework - Research, selection, and implementation of core academic collaboration, content, and courseware management systems. Our goal is to integrate Sakai courseware management tools with the Connexions learning content creation application and with digital asset management tools (D-Space, Fedora, MDID/Almagest) and create a framework supporting the addition of other collaborative tools.
- Services Provided by IT - In support of clarifying IT's service relationship with the Rice community we developed four service documents: Core Computing Services, Research Services, Classroom/Lab Services, and Media Services. These documents explain and clarify IT service provision and standards in each area.
- Research Computing - IT's Research Computing group is supporting the Computer Science department and the Computer and Information Technology Institute (CITI) in selecting and installing a new high performance computational cluster. This new cluster (the Rice Computational Research Cluster or RCRC) will support Rice's growing needs for compute cycles and for a platform to research high performance and GRID computing issues.
- Classroom and Lab Plan Development - In collaboration with ITAC and the University Registrar, Rice IT is developing a classroom/lab plan that will set classroom strategy and standards, and document long-term maintenance and lifecycle needs.
