SSL-only to be activated March 1

On March 1, 2006, Rice University's division of Information Technology (IT) will no longer support non-SSL e-mail connections on our e-mail servers.

SSL (Secured Sockets Layer) is an encryption scheme that scrambles your e-mail NetIDs and password so that no one can "capture" it on our network. In the fall of 2005, we sent emails to customers that may not have had SSL turned on. At this time you should check to make sure it is enabled.

If for some reason you have not made the change, please visit http://www.rice.edu/it/resources/security/ssl.html to see how to change the SSL setting for your email program(s). All you need to do is identify the e-mail program(s) you use in the table at the center of this page, click the link and it will show you how to turn on SSL to protect your email password.

NOTE: If you are not on RUF or Owlnet (i.e. Computer Science, ECE, etc.), consult with your divisional representative for the proper e-mail server settings.

Also, any computer (including your home machine) that you use to talk to the Rice e-mail servers must have SSL turned on or you will not be able to access your e-mail once the conversion occurs on March 1, 2006.

If you have any questions, are uncomfortable performing this change, or if you experience a problem during the process, please submit a ticket by clicking the following link (http://helpdesk.rice.edu/submit.html) or call the Help Desk at #4357.
