It is especially in the "inner city" that the dream of space,
such as a high-speed urban expressway, produces a landscape of perceived
dread, such as the South Bronx. It is here that dreams of space turn into
prisons -- only to generate more dreams and more prisons. In a spiral of
increasing exclusion -- a virtual militarization of the environment which
seems to end only in absolute closure -- the ultimate corporate ghetto is
under construction.
And the world that has been consigned to the "outside"
of the urban fortifications is restless.
