Hobble: American Rice silos, 1995. Images by the author.

Houston regularly rehearses its own destruction.

Not satisfied with nature's slow-but-steady toll -- the seasonal racking of the soil and fault movement that twist foundations and crack slabs, the dank mildew that assaults any home left shut and without air conditioning in summer -- Houston accelerates the weathering process with a strict regimen of willful, self-inflicted violence.
