Message from Chief Rodriguez
The Rice University Police Department (RUPD) is excited to welcome students back to campus for what is sure to be an unprecedented academic year. While we are all getting accustomed to learning in a new environment, RUPD remains committed to providing a safe and secure campus for all members of the Rice community. As part of this commitment, I am pleased to present Rice University’s 2020 Annual Security and Fire Report. The report contains important information about safety and security at Rice, including campus crime and fire statistics required by the Clery Act. The report provides information about campus crime prevention and safety awareness programs offered on campus to all students, staff, and faculty.
These reports reflect some of the very important work we do at the Rice University Police Department, together with other campus offices, including the Environmental Health and Safety Department, which provides fire statistics for the university. Rice’s goal—and that of our police department—is to provide a safe, orderly environment that is conducive to achieving research, teaching, and learning objectives. I am honored to lead a group of dedicated men and women at RUPD who are committed to partnering with the Rice community to ensure a safe campus where everyone is treated equally, with dignity and respect.
As we look forward to engaging with students and other community members, we invite you to ask questions and share your concerns and suggestions by contacting RUPD at https://rupd.rice.edu. You may also email me directly at crod@rice.edu. Please remember that if you ever experience a crime in our campus community or see something suspicious, immediately contact RUPD at 713-348-6000 or use one of the blue-light emergency phones located across campus. Please add our phone number to your mobile phone’s list of frequently called numbers to facilitate a quick call to us in the event of an emergency.
On behalf of the dedicated police officers and staff of RUPD, I wish you a safe and successful academic year.
